Especially for kids
Fly along!
Aeroplanes always appeal to children’s imagination, but many adults are also fascinated by the world of aviation, so a visit to the Aviodrome Nationaal Luchtvaart-themapark (National Aviation Theme Park) at Lelystad airport is a perfect excursion for the entire family. Step into the magical time machine and see the Fokker Eerste Spin (Fokker First Spin) from 1911 and fighter jets from the 1960s… In the reconstructed Schiphol Oost airport station building from 1928, sample the atmosphere and glory of those days. The large Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet is ready for you, so be sure to take the opportunity and see the cockpit, kitchen, the cargo compartment and business class. If you want to know what it’s like to fly a plane, take a ride in the flight simulator and imagine yourself to be a real fighter jet pilot.
Another world
Step into the Walibi World family park; an entirely new world of excitement, fun and cheerfulness for the entire family. Daredevils naturally start with the Goliath: the fastest, highest, longest and steepest rollercoaster in the Benelux! Not everything in Walibi World takes place in the air; take a journey across the waves in the El Rio rapids or whiz off a waterfall on a trunk in the Crazy River. If you prefer things a bit more mellow, be surprised by the various shows or watch how everyone is enjoying themselves from a table at an outdoor café. The youngest visitors are sure to have a great day in Walibi Land with Walibi and his friends.
Butterflies and orchids
Orchids are always special due to their distinctive shapes and colours and because it is not easy to grow them, but the Orchideeën Hoeve (orchid farm) in Luttelgeest knows how to deal with them. There are thousands of different orchid types in the tropical garden, all of them flowering beautifully. While walking through a greenhouse, imagine yourself in a tropical rain forest and in the nursery see how orchids are grown in a special way. In the recently opened Vlinder Vallei (Butterfly Valley), which covers 1,500 square metres, see thousands of butterflies flutter about through the valley and near the steep rock faces. They may even land on your head or sweater… In this largest butterfly valley in Europe, countless colourful plants provide the butterflies with nectar.
Take the children to Bataviastad Museums
If you think that a visit to a museum is boring, go to Bataviastad Musea in Lelystad, where children are introduced to the Batavia and its history in an active way. The Bataviawerf wharf regularly holds other activities for children, such as searches or costume balls, where the youngest guests can horse around on the wharf dressed like ship boys or girls. The Nieuw Land Museum also makes a museum visit a treat for children, with various exhibitions for young visitors, such as the permanent ‘Het Watertheater’ (Water Theatre) exhibition where children put themselves in the shoes of an engineer, land designer, farmer or water engineer and learn how a polder is created. In the ‘Ondergronds’ (Underground) exhibition, children excavate things from the past like real archaeologists and in the ship of the Watermensen (Water People) they can listen to exciting stories about these people and hear the sounds of the sea.
Indoor
The dream of every child: playing with their friends all day long in a space crammed with wonderful activities. Ballorig, in Almere and Lelystad, is an indoor recreation paradise for children up to 12. Climbing, clambering, jumping, playing in the ball pit, sliding… children just can’t get enough. And when children are having a good time, so are their parents or grandparents. Other great indoor activities include a day of skiing at the Rivièra Snow Village in Biddinghuizen (even in summer!), or a day of water fun in the Aqua Mundo swimming paradise on the De Eemhof in Zeewolde.
