Luttelgeest
Luttelgeest is a genuine country village with a pleasant community feel, situated on the eastern side of the polder, where the old Zuiderzee coast used to be. Just like the rest of the polder, this area has interesting landscapes with fruit orchards, green houses with roses, Peruvian Lilies, peppers and tomatoes, and green meadows on which cattle graze. The Orchid farm (‘Orchideeënhoeve’) is certainly worth a visit; it started as a small orchid nursery and has since grown into a major attraction, receiving approximately 150,000 visitors a year. The various farm shops offer a wide variety of fresh fruit and other local produce. At only a short distance from the village is the Kuinderbos forest, with its superb cycling and walking routes. Other village sights are the Roman Catholic church, the restored weighbridge, and, on the site where beet boats used to be turned, a 10-metre (32-foot) fishing pier has been built for those who like their holidays nice and quiet.
